The undeserved underestimation of marelines

Marelines form the foundation for horse breeding. This is clearly demonstrated by the fact that certain marelines, via their various branches, will produce successful sporthorses and licensed stallions for generation upon generation. Marelines are the constant factor in breeding. And stallion lines can only survive because of this constant factor.

The only book ever published about Dutch marelines is "De Groninger Warmbloedfokkerij (Groninger Warmblood Breeding)", written by J.B. Kamphuis, which appeared in 1948. There is a growing need among breeders to gain solid insight into the gene pool provided by the dam's side of licensed stallions and sporthorses performing at national and international level. Unimpeded by any borders of breeding regions or subjective preferences of studbooks, "The Leading Mares" will offer you this highly essential information.

Particularly in bloodstock breeding the influence of the marelines has always been considered of foremost importance. With the result that bloodstock breeding has progressed relatively much faster. In order to gain solid insight into this subject matter, it is necessary that the marelines are logically numbered, as is indeed the case in bloodstock breeding and in the Holstein and Trakhener studbooks. All the families occurring in "The Leading Mares" are therefore numbered with the prefix NL-mareline.

This first book covers 50 marelines, more than 2,750 horses, and is illustrated with hundreds of photographs. For each mareline its relationship with (inter)national sport horses and stallions licensed by any studbook recognized by the WBFSH has been charted. Eventually "The Leading Mares" will cover about 250 marelines. Additions will be published over the years, containing updates and new photographic material. You can find more information about the first two additions, “Supplement 2004/2005” and “Supplement 2005/2006”, on this website.
In this way "The Leading Mares" will become a standard work for Dutch riding horse breeding and will form a basic tool for breeders to become successful and to solidify their success in sporthorse breeding
